More than 29 430 cases and 5 deaths have been reported since the beginning of this year. This is roughly three times more than in the same period of the previous year. Since the beginning of October, some 1090 laboratory-confirmed infections have been reported, with Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Gauteng and Free State provinces particularly hard hit. Around 1 252 000 infections have been reported nationwide this year, compared to around 13 140 in the same period last year. The Afar (N) region is particularly affected, having experienced heavy rainfall in the spring. Anyone who develops symptoms during or after a stay in the affected areas should seek medical attention immediately.

In the state of Karnataka (SW), 2 elderly men and a 3 year old girl died this year. India is one of the countries with the highest number of animal and human cases in the world. About 250 people died in 18 states last year. The worst affected states are Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal. The main vector is the (stray) dog. Large cities are also affected. Since the end of January this year, 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) infections have been confirmed in Aceh province on the island of Sumatra. Last November, a child fell ill there. The prevalence of VDPV makes the country a country with a potential risk of international spread of the pathogen. WHO classifies the risk of yellow fever in Tanzania as low and vaccination is generally not recommended. According to the official entry vaccination regulation (ITH 2020), yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for persons over 1 year of age when entering from endemic areas. Contrary to official information, a yellow fever vaccination is often required when entering Zanzibar. Most infections were reported in the states of Kentucky, Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Indiana. Carefully observe hygiene measures and consider vaccination if necessary.

Since 2014, numerous outbreaks in domestic poultry have been registered across the country, killing more than 129,000 animals.
