Australia

Murray Valley encephalitis: at least 14 infections have been confirmed nationally this year, affecting the states of New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. This mosquito-borne virus is common in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Pay extra attention to mosquito repellent.

Costa Rica

Malaria: Since the beginning of April, there has been an outbreak of tropical malaria in Limón (O) province, where 139 cases have been reported so far. The cantons of Pococí and Limón are particularly affected. The number of new infections has been declining since the beginning of May. A very good mosquito repellent should always be followed, and chemoprophylaxis may be useful in affected areas. Laos

Dengue: The disease occurs nationwide. Since the beginning of this year, around 1840 people have been recorded as infected, compared to around 340 at the same time last year. Last year, more than 32,350 cases and 28 deaths were recorded. Roughly half of the cases come from the capital Vientiane and the provinces of Saravan, Attapeu and Luang Namtha are also particularly affected. New Caledonia

Leptospirosis: Popular with 2 tropical cyclones and heavy rains, 102 infections have already been confirmed this year, 2 people have died. The pathogen is shed by mammals (rats and dogs) and can enter humans through minor skin wounds. In moist environments (water, mud), leptospires can survive in the environment for long periods of time. Adequate contact with wet habitats and inland waters should be avoided.

Vanuatu

Leptospirosis: Approximately 75 infections and 6 deaths have been reported since the beginning of this year. As a result of the two cyclones that hit the country within a week, the number of cases rose again in March. The islands of Espiritu Santo and Efate are particularly affected. Leptospires enter the environment through the urine of infected mammals (rats, dogs). Transmission to humans occurs by direct or indirect contact with urine through small skin or mucous membrane injuries. In moist environments (water, mud), leptospires can survive in the environment for long periods of time. Corresponding contacts should be avoided.
