Costa Rica
Malaria: Since the beginning of April, there has been an outbreak of tropical malaria in Limón (O) province, where 139 cases have been reported so far. The cantons of Pococí and Limón are particularly affected. The number of new infections has been declining since the beginning of May. Leptospirosis: Popular with 2 tropical cyclones and heavy rains, 102 infections have already been confirmed this year, 2 people have died. The pathogen is shed by mammals (rats and dogs) and can enter humans through minor skin wounds. In moist environments (water, mud), leptospires can survive in the environment for long periods of time. Adequate contact with wet habitats and inland waters should be avoided.

Leptospirosis: Approximately 75 infections and 6 deaths have been reported since the beginning of this year. As a result of the two cyclones that hit the country within a week, the number of cases rose again in March. The islands of Espiritu Santo and Efate are particularly affected. Leptospires enter the environment through the urine of infected mammals (rats, dogs). Transmission to humans occurs by direct or indirect contact with urine through small skin or mucous membrane injuries.
