Meningococcal Infections

Meningococci, or the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, are a serious group of pathogens found worldwide. The disease is transmitted through respiratory droplets during close contact with an infected person or an asymptomatic carrier, for example, through coughing, sneezing, kissing, or prolonged exposure in closed communities. Humans are the sole reservoir of the infection. Globally, the highest risk is in the so-called “meningitis belt” in equatorial Africa, stretching from Senegal to Ethiopia, where thousands of cases occur during the dry season (December–June). While in Africa the main serogroups are ACWY, in Europe serogroup B is dominant.

Infants, adolescents, young adults, and immunocompromised patients are most at risk. People living in group settings—such as students in dormitories, soldiers, or participants in large gatherings—typically face an increased risk. The disease can develop very quickly even in a person who has been completely healthy until now.

The incubation period is 2–10 days. The initial symptoms may resemble those of a common viral illness—fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, or vomiting. However, within a few hours, severe meningitis or sepsis may develop. Typical symptoms include impaired consciousness, neck stiffness, seizures, and skin hemorrhages. The disease usually progresses very rapidly and, despite intensive treatment, can lead to death or permanent complications, such as limb amputation or hearing loss.
Treatment consists of immediate administration of antibiotics and intensive hospital care. Vaccination is the most effective form of prevention.
