MALARONE

An antimalarial drug intended for the prevention and treatment of malaria. The medication contains a combination of the active ingredients atovaquone and proguanil, which inhibit the reproduction of malaria-causing parasites in the body. It is recommended to take the tablets with food or a milk-based beverage for better absorption, ideally after breakfast or lunch, to ensure a stable blood level of the medication in the evening, when mosquitoes are most active.

Dosage Schedule

For malaria prevention, the medication is usually started 1–2 days before entering a high-risk area, continued daily throughout the stay, and for an additional 7 days after leaving the high-risk area.
In children, the dosage depends on body weight; adults take one tablet daily. A doctor always determines the appropriateness of use after consultation at a travel medicine center.

When should you postpone or consult a healthcare professional before taking this medication?

This medication may not be suitable for all patients. Extra caution is required, particularly in patients with kidney or liver disease or, for example, those currently taking blood-thinning medications. .
